DALMATIAN BIBLIOGRAPHY

Your bookstore or library will have some excellent books on dog care and training. A wide selection also is available online from Direct Books at www.dogwise.com, or www.amazon.com, or www.4mdogbooks.com. The books listed below are among our favorites.

DALMATIANS: A Complete Pet Owner’s Manual  by Tanya B. Ditto (Hauppauge, NY, Barron’s Educational Series, 1991). This inexpensive paperback  is a useful first book on Dals. Some info is slightly out of date, and the text does not capitalize Dalmatian, which is a proper noun and should be capitalized.

THE DALMATIAN by Anna Katherine Nicholas (Neptune City, NJ: TFH Publications, 1986). This Dalmatian book contains many color photos of Dalmatians, including a number of ours! Histories of many well-known kennels are included.

THE  DALMATIAN:  COACH DOG - FIRE DOG by Alfred and Esmeralda Treen (New York: Howell Book House, 1980; 1991). The Treens are judges and former breeders of Dalmatians, and their book has detailed history of the breed and of many kennels. Many of your puppy's ancestors are pictured in this book.

THE DALMATIAN (or THE POPULAR DALMATIAN) by Eleanor Frankling (London: Popular Dogs, 1964, rev. 1974, rev. 1987). Long out of print, this English book, a classic containing much information about British dogs and about Dal care and breeding, has recently been reprinted in the UK. If you can find it, don't pass it by!

HOW TO RAISE A PUPPY YOU CAN LIVE WITH by Rutherford and Neil (Loveland, CO: Alpine Publications, 3rd ed.,1999). A book that puppy owners shouldn't live without, this one gives practical advice on training your pup. In addition to babyhood and young adulthood, the book covers the middle stages of puppyhood, so often neglected in other books.

HOW TO BE  YOUR DOG'S BEST FRIEND by the Monks of New Skete (Boston: Little, Brown, and Co., 1978). This book is subtitled A Training Manual for Dog Owners, and it is a classic work. It provides both training suggestions and solutions to common dog problems.

DOG OWNER'S HOME VETERINARY HANDBOOK by Carlson and Giffin. (New York: Howell Book House, 1980, 1992). This book describes canine ailments and treatments in terms understandable to the average dog owner.
